For a long time ago, several patches away I remember one mission me, Mugin and Dagobert where flying escort for a couple of bombers. Dagobert was originally planning to fly bomber but later changed to fighter. We scrambled at Düsseldorf 15 bombers and 10+ fighters.
Cooper was leading the formation. To hide our intentions the bomber-formation stared to fly NW far above the charted territories. The fighters flew on economy to save fuel for the combat over English soil. We knew that we had about one minute of fighting until we had to pull back.
After a long flight West then more NorthWest then suddenly South we finally started to see some small puffs in the air indication the target was below. Suddenly the sky was full of red circles buzzing around us as bees. I hunted after one of them with two or three more on my tail shooting like crazy. I heard on the radio that some of the bombers already had been shot down or was In the process of but I continued to shoot and was convinced I took down at least two. Suddenly some spit got a hit on me in the legs and I had to bug out of the war zone.
Somehow I manage to get down low and point my craft towards Germany again. As I saw the coast of France I noticed the fuel-lamp started to show red and with my pilot hurt I was sure I was done for. But somehow my plane wouldn't give up yet.
Close up on instrument panel showing my low fuel.
As I was flying over Antwerp my plane started to shake and cough so I throttled back to a total minimum and continued the flight. The fuel lamp continued to show red and the fuel meter was dangerously lowering all the time. I was literally flying on fumes over Breda. But there the fuel was out.
Sailing on the wind I notices Gilze airfield, a really nice view. Without engines and with some pure luck I did some turns around the airfield looking for a good landing. Remember.. I had a shot up pilot in a shot up plane. No fast manoeuvre here.
hurmmm..
